The Lotus flower is regarded in many different cultures, especially in eastern religions, as a symbol of purity, enlightenment, self-regeneration and rebirth. Its characteristics are a perfect analogy for the human condition: even when its roots are in the dirtiest waters, the Lotus produces the most beautiful flower. These Malas are hand crafted with 108 lotus flower seeds plus one guru bead used to keep count of mantra repetitions, or japa, during meditation. A mala with 108 beads to achieve fulfillment; the number 108 has spiritual significance as it is believed that 108 energy lines converge to form anahata, the heart chakra. One way to perform japa with a mala is: Sit straight, keeping the spine upright, keep the eyes closed, hold the mala in the right or left hand, let it rest on the second and this fingers, then use the thumb to bring down each bead while chanting your mantra of choice.
